Our members have known each other for over 10 years. Through our love for animals, we met one another working together in a successful small animal hospital. During our time together, our team was responsible for rescuing, rehabilitating, and facilitating the adoption of countless animals that were homeless or in need. Although we are no longer working professionally under the same roof, we formed Advocat for Animals to continue our animal advocacy work.

Dr. Rita graduated from Colorado State University Veterinary Medicine College in 1993. She is a current member of the American Veterinary Medicine Association, the Maine Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Association of Feline Practitioners. Dr. Rita founded her own veterinary practice in Scarborough, ME, in 2008 and successfully owned, managed, and ran the practice for over 10 years. One of the many accomplishments of Rita's practice was the rescue, rehab, and adoption of countless cats and dogs.
Shannon began working in the veterinary medicine field at the age of 16 as a boarding kennel attendant and eventually as a veterinary assistant for a number of years. Shannon has since become a Registered Nurse and currently works in human medicine, but continues to participate in animal rescue and advocacy as a part of the Advocat team.
Jess has worked in the veterinary field for 24 years. She started at an emergency hospital before graduating high school. She spent almost 10 years there, and then moved on to general practice where she furthered her skill as a surgical assistant became dental certified. As of now, she is working in a specialty hospital with the cardiology and oncology departments. She has a passion for animals, and has several rescues of her own.
I came to meet Dr. Demeuse many years ago while working at a local bank. I have been in the field of banking for almost 32 years. I also have experience in accounts payable working for several businesses. That along for my love of cats made partnering with Dr. Demeuse a perfect fit.
I worked as the bookkeeper for 10 years at the veterinary hospital that Dr. Demeuse founded.
While there I was surrounded by more animals that I could imagine. Three of them in particular stole my heart.
An Egyptian Mao I named Herbie came in with siblings that needed to be adopted. His green eyes met mine and the rest is history.
Next was a tiny barn kitten that came in with her siblings. She had flea bitten anemia. She was the only one to survive and needed a total blood transfusion. She had no mother or family, so she never learned to meow like a regular cat. She only made squeak sounds. She would sleep on my shoulder while I worked. So, I named her Squeaks. Her medical issue caused her right eye to not form correctly and only partially opens.
Last is Peanut. She was a feral cat that made her way to the hospital. For the first few years she was so scared that she barely came out from underneath a blanket other than to eat. She has severe food allergies which caused her to lose most of the hair on the back of her neck. She also does not have any teeth. Gruesome for many to look at but I think she is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. Whenever I was at work I would go to her cage and say hello. Slowly she came around and started coming out from under her blanket. She eventually came to sit on my lap as I worked at my computer. To this day she is probably the most affectionate loving cat I have ever known. She still sits on my lap when I work from home and sleeps on top of my head with her mouth wide open resting on my eye and snores.
The bond I have experienced with these cats is not anything you could possibly describe to anyone. I currently live in Saco ME with my 3 cats and a dog. Here I am pictured with Peanut
It was again a perfect fit working with Dr. Demeuse helping cats in need.
